Month-by-month breakdown

April

Average 8–15°C. Spring arrives: parks flower (magnolias, cherry blossoms), trees green. Crowds thin. Good for walking, photography (soft light). Outdoor cafés open but still cool for terrace drinks. Rain is common; pack a light jacket and umbrella. Easter holidays (late March–early April) bring family tourists. Accommodation prices rise slightly; book 2 weeks ahead.

May

Average 12–19°C. Best month for most visitors. Daylight extends to 21:00+. Warm, dry, long evenings. Graslei terraces fill with locals. Cycling comfortable. All outdoor activities ideal. Crowds are moderate (peaks Thursday–Sunday). Museums never feel packed. Hotels available but book ahead. Food tours and brewery tours run daily.

June

Average 15–22°C. Peak summer starts; daylight 21:00+. Warm, some rain mid-month. Tourist season kicks in: Gravensteen and boat tours have queues by 10:00. Hotel prices peak. Book accommodations and tours 1 month ahead. The city is lively but not yet overwhelming. Good: golden hour photography, late sunset walks, evening concerts.

July (Gentse Feesten July 10–14)

Average 17–23°C. Warmest month. Gentse Feesten (10-day festival) coincides with peak summer: 2 million visitors, 22:00–06:00 stages, boat parties, free open-air concerts. Accommodation books out 6 months ahead; prices triple. City chaotic, streets crowded 17:00+. Restaurants reserve tables, tourist traps multiply. Gravensteen has 90-minute waits. Come if you crave the party; skip if you want to see the city itself.

August

Average 16–23°C. Warmest month, peak crowds. Restaurants close mid-month for summer holidays (2–4 weeks). City feels less busy after Aug 15 when locals leave. Locals head to the coast (Ostend, De Panne); fewer day-trippers in Ghent mid-month. Good for beach day trips to the Belgian coast (60 km). Hotels still pricey. Thunderstorms common (usually brief).

September

Average 13–19°C. Second-best month. Summer heat fades; daylight 20:30. Families return to school mid-month, crowds thin after Sept 10. Weather unpredictable (warm some days, rain others); layers essential. Accommodation prices drop 15–25% from July–August peaks. Gravensteen queues shorter. Brewery tours and food tours still run daily. Gardens still green; parks not yet bare.

October

Average 8–14°C. Rainy, cooler. Daylight shrinks to 19:00. Tourist numbers drop. Budget accommodations available. Halloween markets appear late month. Museums less crowded. Golden autumn trees if weather cooperates. Pack waterproof jacket; umbrella essential. Cobblestones are wet and slippery. Not ideal for outdoor photography or walking tours.

November

Average 3–8°C. Cold, grey, overcast. Daylight 16:00 (dark by 4pm). Christmas markets open late month (Graffiti Street, Sint-Baafskathedraal plaza). Budget: hotels cheapest of the year. Gravensteen feels like a dungeon (dark interior, cold). St Bavo and church interiors appeal. Requires: coat, scarf, umbrella, waterproof boots.

December

Average 0–4°C. Festive but dark. Daylight 7–8 hours (sunset 15:30). Christmas markets, lights, mulled wine, festive atmosphere. Accommodation prices double around Christmas (Dec 20–Jan 5). Outdoor sightseeing is bleak (dark, cold). Museums, brewery tours, indoor markets (Torvehallerne equivalent) appeal. New Year’s Eve (Dec 31) sees street parties on Graslei and Vrijdagmarkt.

January–March

Average −1 to 3°C. Museum season. Daylight 7–9 hours. Cheapest accommodation of the year (outside Christmas week). Cold, grey, sometimes snow, sometimes rain. Indoor museums, brewery tap rooms, cafés feel cosy. Tourist numbers lowest. Canal occasionally freezes (rare). Easter holidays (late March) bring families again. Spring flowers (crocuses, daffodils) appear late February.

Sweet spot: May or September

Both months offer warm temperatures (12–19°C), daylight until 20:30+, manageable crowds, and reasonable hotel prices. May leans toward perfect; September offers better prices and fewer tourists. June is warm but crowded. April is quieter but cooler. July is iconic for the festival but chaotic and expensive. August is hot and touristy. October–March suit museum lovers, cyclists, and budget travellers.

Event planning

Gentse Feesten (July 10–14): 10-day festival, iconic, book 6 months ahead, expect chaos. Christmas markets (Nov–Dec): Graffiti Street, Sint-Baafskathedraal plaza, lively but cold.
